Little Blue has been to a lot of places. Probably traveled more than most much older guys. But this weekend he broke the height record.
We spent the weekend in the Julian Alps: camping on the banks of river Soča by night and hiking by day. On Sunday we climbed to Zasavska Koča na Prehodavcih. When we started, we thought that would be a house at around 1,600m in a nice green valley. We also heard there were some lakes nearby so we brought our swimming suits. You know, just in case. And off we went on our merry way.
After a couple of hours of walking we exited the gorgeous forest and found ourselves at the beginning of a beautiful valley. We thought for sure this was it. So we kept going. And going. And going. And the path kept climbing and climbing. After a while, we noticed the greenery around us is not so thick anymore. The trees are sparse and mostly look like bushes. And then we were above the tree line. But there was still no house. Or a lake. The view, however, became more beautiful around each bend so we just kept walking; a bit more miserable with every step but still in awe of the mountain. Finally after about 3 h 45 min we reached the final bend and saw a mountain hut. We also realized that the hut was actually above 2000m , it was 6°C outside and the lakes are another 2h walk away.
So that was an obvious no to swimming, but that soup we had up there was one of the best things I ever had to eat. And the swimming suits came in quite handy to wipe our greasy chins. It is quite an accomplishment to climb your first serious climb unknowingly. Human stupidity and persistence are wonderful things. I don’t know what we would do without them.
